About
The Writer.
I am a young, as yet unknown novelist, essayist, travel writer, and literature/film/music reviewer, among other things. Apart from a few submissions in my college literary magazine, I have never been published. (I currently work as a proofreader.) Writing is my talent and my joy. Call it a cliché if you must, I won’t judge. My dream is to contribute to my culture and my world, and to leave something of value behind.
The Mission.
I always thought it would be great to follow someone from never having published anything to becoming an established author. By “established” I simply mean supporting oneself from one’s writing, not necessarily becoming wealthy or famous. Whenever I read about the early stages of my favorite authors’ careers, it usually goes: “I always wanted to be a writer, so I started sending stories to magazines. It was hard at first, but then I got a book deal.” In other words, maddeningly vague.
So I began this blog to do it myself. The publishing industry, as we have all heard, is treacherous; I know I won’t succeed right away. But I believe I can do this, or I would not have begun. What I hope for this project is that it will provide other aspiring authors and artists with an account of what I have gone through on my way to achieving my goals. I hope it will provide encouragement and reassurance.
But let’s be honest—for now, I hope it’ll keep me off my lazy butt, because I know I’ll have to post here even when I’m moody or upset.
There are two major things this blog will not do. It will not be a showcase for my work. I might occasionally post an excerpt to ask for opinions, or something that I don’t intend to publish. But the main focus will be the journey to establishing my career. It will also not be a guide on how to get published. There are already so many resources of this nature out there that adding my own voice would be silly, especially since I don’t know anything about it yet.
